Aural Gravy Records of San Diego presents a day of independent music – live and in recorded form – like San Diego has never seen. May we introduce to you Sonic Indie Music Expo! Sonic is a music expo held in support of independent record stores and to promote the hobby of music collecting. Sonic is also a way for the community to show its love and support to the independent mom and pop owned record stores. “For the music collector, independent record sellers are indispensable,” states the Sonic Indie Music Expo official website. “Sadly, they are slowly disappearing in America.” With big corporation stores taking over the world at a feverish rate, local independent record stores have lost their hold on music sales. These stores are able to sell huge amounts of various formats for less money making it nearly impossible for small, privately owned record shops to compete. Not to mention the takeover of digital music which allows listeners to fill their jean pockets with a record stores worth of albums, without the need to even put those jeans on and leave the house. But for plenty of music lovers and collectors those ways of acquiring albums just does not cut it. There is a specific feeling to being inside of a record store. Thumbing through stacks and stacks of record sleeves old and new. Trying to find an old classic or a new gem to add to your collection. We all have a favorite local record store and Sonic is here for the community to show their love and support. Going to a record store is a beautiful experience. An experience we feel needs to be preserved for music collectors of today and of the future to enjoy. The official Sonic website says, “They (record stores) still are the favorite hangouts, not only of record collectors, but also of bands, musicians, and music enthusiasts far and wide, who rejoice to be within their walls. Now we are bringing them out of those walls and out into the open to celebrate their greatness.”

On June 2nd, music lovers from all over Southern California will gather at Porters Pub on the UCSD Campus in La Jolla to take part in Sonic Indie Music Expo! Local record shops will be on hand buying, selling and (possibly) accepting record trades to all attendees. Cds, music collectibles and of course vinyl records will all be available in full force. Also happening all day long will be live music from indie bands such as (Just to name a few…) The New Kinetics, The Very, Kelsea Little and the 78′s and The New Limb. Music starts at 12:30. A beer garden will be serving beer and wine to guests 21 and up, (sponsored by Sapporo) and Street Eats food truck will be on hand slinging delicious food all day long. Tickets for Sonic are 11.50$ presale and 15$ day of the event and children under 12 are free. To purchase tickets please head over to the official Sonic Indie Music Expo website. (Proceeds from the event will benefit the National Association of Music Merchants, proprietors of the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California.)

Please join us now as we speak to David Miano of Aural Gravy Records about what we can all expect from this awesome event coming our way on June 2nd!

“Long live independent record stores! In my youth the record store was a place of discovery, a place you could spend hours scouring the aisles for new music to explore. With vinyl making a comeback, that feeling can be rediscovered. I’ve even heard of some new stores opening up. Plus it’s not just about vinyl–cassette tapes too! Get away from the keyboard and head down to Sonic to see your favorite record stores all in one place!” – Tim Pyles, host of the Local 94/9.

What was the idea behind creating Sonic Indie Music Fest?

We prefer our concerts to be enhanced in some way. Straight-up live performances by great bands are wonderful, and they are at the core of what we do. But we then take that and add something special to raise it to another level and set it apart from most shows. We originally scheduled Sonic back in February as a live show only. It was indoors and restricted to ages 21+. Part way into the preparation of that event, we realized this was not really what we wanted to do. So we took the show outdoors, made it all ages, and added the record show. Now it is something out of the ordinary.

Sonic Indie Fest is really about promoting record collecting and local record shops. Which mom and pop record shops can we expect to see at the event?

So far we have commitments from M-Theory Music, Taang! Records, Thrift Trader, The Vinyl Room, Red Brontosaurus Records, and Spin Records.

What are some of the things people can definitely expect at Sonic Indie Fest this June 2nd?

First of all, some fantastic live performances. A lot of thought went into the selection of the artists, so that we could put on a top notch show. Second, a fabulous selection of recorded music–vinyl, cds, and other music-related collectibles. Third, delicious eats. And last, but not least, plenty of beer and wine.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to The National Association of Music Merchants. For people who are unaware of this association, what is it and what does it do for musicians?

NAMM, based in Carlsbad, is a not-for-profit organization that runs the Museum of Making Music, whose mission is to celebrate the history and future of music making. We think it’s an excellent fit for us.

What food and drink will be on site for event goers to enjoy?

We’re excited to have SD Street Eats, one of the best gourmet food truck businesses in town, provide delicious food for the attendees. We’ll also have a beer garden set up for people ages 21+. Our featured beer is Sapporo, which happens to be one of my personal favorites.

What is the thing you are most looking forward to on June 2nd?

Being in the midst of hundreds of music lovers, of course!
